A Horsey Photo Shoot

Recently I've been making an effort to challenge myself photographically over the last few months, but this was way out of my comfort zone. Little known fact about me - I hate horses. Like, really hate them. I don't trust them, and I hate their mouths. I'm aware it's weird to hate horse mouths, but I do. In general, horses make me uncomfortable.

But when the opportunity arose to photograph a casual cross country horse ride, I decided to go with it. It was something a little different and definitely a challenge, but I was really pleased with how the snaps came out.

We headed out to Rockbourne Cross Country Course out in the New Forest, a beautiful spot surrounded by rolling hills and beautiful greenery. We got lucky, and this day happened to be gorgeous, beautiful sunshine that warmed your skin all the way through. I actually enjoyed myself a lot more than I thought I would.

The course itself is great, full of different jumps and courses to try, I particularly loved the water spot, the contrast of the splashing water against the horses legs was just beautiful to capture.

I might not like horses much, but there's no denying they are beautiful animals, and they photograph so well. They're so strong and capturing their muscles in action was incredibly rewarding. It's different to photographing still life in that there's a real adrenaline rush of will you get the perfect shot!

The real star of the show for me though was Dudley! Have you ever seen a more photogenic dog?! Aside from being the gosh darn cutest thing I've ever seen, he was also seriously sweet. He spent a lot of the day snuggled into my legs and I think if he ever has puppies, I'll be needing one!

Considering I've never shot anything like this before, I was really pleased with how these turned out!

For those interested these were shot on a Canon 550d using a 40mm lens and 75-200mm lens.
