Depsite the large quantity of time I spend in Topshop in Oxford Circus (you can find me hiding by the hats first thing on a Monday morning, and making googely eyes at the handbags on a Thursday night), I have never before given in to the tempting delicacies behind the glass counter of concession stand 'Lola's Cupcakes'. I've been close, but never have I relented. But today, after perusing the racks in Topman with the boyfriend, and trying to prolong my time in the store before heading out into the cold, I gave in.
But then of course, I couldn't decide between the lemon cupcake, and a good old fashioned vanilla, with blue swirly icing and butterflies on top. So... I got both. And I have no regrets, they were amazing! And the boyfriend chose Rocky Road, a beautiful confection of a cupcake, piled high wich chocolate buttercream and marshmallows.
First up, the Vanilla Buttercream. It was light, fluffy and the perfect ratio of vanilla. Totally faultless, the perfect cake for if you fancy something sweet but you don't want anything too complicated.
Chocolate monster that he is, The Boyfriend annihilated this cupcake, I barely had time to take a photo of the marbling inside. I assumed he liked it because he was silent the entire time he was eating it, and the only complaint he had, with a mouth full of marshmallows, was that the cupcake was piled too high with icing, marshmallows and chocolate for him to bite straight into it, he had to have a bite of the icing and then a bite of the cake. But for all you chocolate lovers out there, this has the seal of approval this end!
I've only had a bite of this cupcake, as I was so full from the first one, so I'm saving the rest for tomorrow! But the bite I did have was utterly delicious, light and zesty, not too sweet but not overly sour from the lemon either! This is an absolutely gorgeous cupcake and it's going to take every ounce of self restraint to not buy one every time I go into Topshop from now on! At £2.50 each they aren't cheap, but they are definitely a nice little treat every now and then!
