When it comes to equipping my iPhone, I'm pretty stingy. I operate under the understanding that the vast majority of the time, there's a free app that can do the job just fine. That being said, there are a few apps worth parting with your pennies for, in my humble opinion.
Headspace.
Whether you meditate regularly, suffer with anxiety or struggle to sleep, this app is incredible. It's designed to be used as a little 10 minute reprieve from daily life and it does just that. Unlike most meditation/relaxation apps, this doesn't feel silly or too much, it's just a simple routine of relaxing. I use this if I'm having one of those days where I feel like I've got too much in my brain, if I'm feeling anxious, and to help me sleep. In fact, I normally fall asleep before it's over!
The app is free to download and you get ten free meditations, then after that it works on a monthly subscription basis. I was sceptical about paying out for this but I've honestly not found a better meditation app. You can revisit your ten free sessions though, so you could just keep using those if you wanted.
Bhuddify.
A slightly more budget friendly option, Bhuddify is another meditation app. The main screen of the app is a giant wheel, you can pick your situation (struggling to sleep, traveling, feeling stressed, work break, etc) or pick 'just meditation', and it offers you a selection of different length meditations, ranging from five to thirty minutes. This one is a little better for targeting different situations (or if you just want a quick boost), but some of the meditations are a little strange. One of the going to sleep once set me off into a giggle fit after instructing me to imagine my body and bed as a 'giant bed shaped satellite dish for emotions'. However, most of the app is stellar, and the meditations are available offline too which is a bonus!
The app costs £2.99 and there are no in app purchases, so this works out as a cheaper alternative to Headspace.
Western Europe TomTom.
I bought this back when I passed my driving test, and whilst the initial purchase stung a little, it's thoroughly proved its worth over the last three years. A much cheaper option than paying out for a full Sat Nav, this is so handy to have if your sense of direction is anything like mine. Even if I know where I'm going, I'll often switch this on in the car anyway, since it shows the speed of the road you're on, your speed and alerts you of any speed cameras too. It does drain your battery though, so you'll need an in car charger! It's £42.99 so it's not a purchase to take lightly, but if you drive a fair bit then it's worth every penny.
Cortex Cam.
Cortex Cam is an app that helps make the most of your iPhone's camera. I mostly just use this for taking photos in low level lighting, you can prolong the shutter speed to get clearer, less grainy images than the standard camera app, and it's worth the price for that feature alone! It costs £2.29, and is a lifesaver for bad lighting!
SKRWT.
I use this when I want to straighten out an image I've taken at an angle. It's handy for shots of buildings and scenery, you can use the app to adjust the size of portions of the image, to create the illusion of depth, or a more even image. It costs £1.49, and is so handy to have.
Afterlight.
My favourite app for editing Instagram photos. It's super straight forward and user friendly, there's a ton of presets, but you can also manipulate more specific things, like brightness, contrast, sharpness, etc. It's pretty much the only photo editing app I use! At £0.79 it won't break the bank, and it's handy to have in your arsenal.
