When the Maybelline Colour Tattoos came out, they were the first of their kind to really take off. Cream shadows in wearable shades, that you could smudge all over the lid without much effort to create an effortless smokey, smudged, lived in eye. Totally on trend. Everyone went nuts for them, but since then there have been so many releases in the same vein that realistically, are just better.
Unfortunately, I've always found the matte shades from the line (Permanent Taupe, I'm looking at you here) to be really dry and hard to work with, and whilst the shimmery shades apply much easier, they tend to fade quickly, just leaving shimmer behind. Bit of a shame.
On a routine browse of the MAC counter last week I stumbled across the Electric Cool Eyeshadows, a limited edition release within the A Novel Romance Collection. They're the most peculiar formula ever, they look like powders, and the finish on the eyelid is definitely more like a powder, but they're spongy to touch, and they apply like a cream/mousse hybrid. Definitely weird, but it's like the best of both worlds. The easy application of a cream shadow, with the intense lasting power of a powder.
As you can see from the swatches above, the MAC shade Superwatt, is very similar too Maybelline's On and On Bronze, both cool toned taupey-bronzes. If anything, On and On Bronze is a tad more cool toned, because the shimmer is silver, whereas Superwatt has a mix of silver and gold shimmer. In real life though, it's very hard to tell the difference.
I've been wearing this all week, just smudged along my eyelid with my finger, with a little winged liner, and it looks so bronzey and autumnal with very minimal effort. It lasts much longer on the eyes than Maybelline's offer, and it feels more comfortable too.
Obviously the pricepoint is much higher than a Maybelline offering, but I personally think it's worth it.
