It's been a while now since the first pencil-style lip products started popping up left right and centre. I think the first ones were the Clinique Chubby Sticks (which, incidentally, I don't like), and from there I think most brands have them now. I've tried a fair few, and I've whittled it down to a short list of my pick of the bunch, so you don't have to try them all.
Clinique Chubby Stick Intense: I might not have been a fan of the original chubby sticks (too sheer & drying), but these I can get on board with. Good creamy colour pay off, easy to apply and a good selection of nudes. Pricey, but worth it. Try - Curviest Caramel.
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils: My personal favourite, these just tick all the boxes. Awesome shade range, gorgeous matte finish but not at all drying, and incredibly long lasting. Winners all round. Try - Cruella & Dolce Vita.
NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencils: My one-true-pencil love's sister. I love how natural these look on the lips, they have a glossy finish but they aren't sticky or wet on the lips, and they still last really well. Try - Rikugien & New Lover.
Soap and Glory Sexy Motherpucker Gloss Sticks: A recent find that I've gotten totally hooked on. These are more like glosses in pencil form than lipsticks, they impart a sheer, almost jelly textured layer of colour, that makes your lips look gorgeous and glossy. I love these for on the go. Try - Plum Jam & Nudist.
Revlon Colorburst Matte Balms: Similar to the NARS Matte offerings, but not as long lasting. A good drugstore alternative though. Shade range is a little suspect. Try - Standout & Elusive.
Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains: If barely - there colour is more your thang, you'll want to try these. They impart the colour pay off of a tinted balm (with no hydration whatsoever, FYI), and are incredibly easy to apply without a mirror. Good for chucking on when you've done a smokey eye and you don't know what to pair it with. Try - Honey.
Bourjois Colour Boost Lacquer Balms: Super glossy, buildable pigmentation, and a good colour range. Don't be put off by the bold shades, they translate beautifully. One of my favourites from the drugstore, but they're often overlooked. Try - Orange Punch, Red Sunrise & Plum Russian.
Sephora Collection Glossy Lip Pencil: Similar to the Soap and Glory offering but with more shimmer. These again are more like lip glosses, but on the lips they aren't sticky and hang around well throughout the day. Try - Glossy Orange.
